If you are prepared to take a small risk, and are prepared to try a few different 811 eeproms, you can (with a little luck) get a perfect result.
The hacked firmware will work perfectly with an original 811 eeprom - including the ability to burn DVD-R
However you may need to try a few different 811 eeproms until you find one with calibration settings compatible with your drive.
I have tried 5 different 811 eeproms on my system, and found that there is really only minor variation in the burn qualities. The variability in the DVD media itself could explain the slight variation in the results.
What is the likelihood of ruining your drive? I would think a very low likelihood.
It works very well for me, but there is no guaranty it will work for you too.

Thank you neighbours for the method how to cook a 811S outta 411S. I did it yesterday and had troubles with the DVD-R media. Burning at 4x works fine, but when it starts to finalize the disc an error writing message appear. Used media are very cheap (AN31).
Jackass, could you please send me those 5 original 811S EEPROMs?
