"Welcome to this dimension where NEC drives are no longer limited by theirs firmwares...
This page describes how to upgrade NEC DVD-RW drives ND-3550A, ND-3551A and ND-4550A to ND-4551A.
All these drives have the same hardware and differ only in firmware. Here's a list of different features of these models:
Model DVD-RAM LabelFlash
ND-3550A - -
ND-3551A - +
ND-4550A + -
ND-4551A + +
This is a common trend nowadays. NEC naturally doesn't allow users to crossflash drive firmwares. But boundaries were made to be broken. NEC DVD-RW firmware consists of main part (I will call it simply firmware in further text), which can be downloaded from NEC site or CD freaks site, etc. and bootcode part. The bootcode resides at the beginning of FlashROM and it's not overwritten during standard firmware upgrade. It also controls flashing process and doesn't allow you to work with firmware for different model. For successful drive model change is needed to replace the bootcode first. So this is task for my tool.
To change your drive model you need to do following steps:
# download official or modified firmware for your new drive model,
# download binflash tool for flashing firmware,
# download NEC ND-35xx & 45xx bootcode flasher 1.0 from this site,
# unrar the content of file using pwd: "nechax0r" to some directory,
# run NECBFL.EXE in dos window (tested under win9x and XP) from current directory,
# you'll see list of all drives, type LUN or drive letter (with slashes) of your NEC drive,
# enter your required target drive model,
# confirm flashing of new bootcode to drive,
# reboot your PC, you should see that BIOS detects your drive as new model with fw version 0.05,
# now use binflash to flash new firmware,
# enjoy new DVD-RAM and/or LabelFlash features (LF support is included in Nero 6.6.1.3 and 6.6.1.4).
