That's news to me. I always assumed that the drive just uses the write strategy and the laser power that's stored in the firmware. And with OPC enabled it uses a small section on the disc to test this and finetunes the strategy stored in firmware and then continues with that modified startegy/ laser power.

I just googled that there is also Running OPC while writing to optimize laser power. However, in this case the burn fails right after doing the OPC in the test area. So ROPC doesn't even come into play if the drive is doing / can do that.
