Pioneer released a bunch of new firmwares for 212 & 213 series drives V1.05, changes:

Added a new function "Damage Prevention mode for music CD"
Improved operational stability

Still NOT recommended to update due to downgrade & crossflash protections.

Thank you, Oinker. You are correct. Pioneer is doing everything they can to trick owners into flashing and crippling their drives with newer firmware.

Hello,
I'm looking for a way to crossflash my new Pioneer BDR-XS07TS to a UHD-friendly BDR-XS07TSUHD.
I stumbled across DVRTool, which my drive doesn't support, and am now looking for the newer BDRFlash.
I also have an old Pioneer BDR-208DBK drive in the basement, which I would like to make UHD-friendly, too.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, I just downgraded my other 212M from S12 1.03 to S12U 1.02, then updated to S12U 1.03. 1.03 seems to be still downgradable and crossflashable, 1.04 (and future firmwares) aren't anymore.

The "safe" firmware versions are drive-specific. On the BDR-212 it is 1.02 and earlier. On the other 212/S12 models, it's 1.03 and earlier. You can tell by looking at the firmware dates on this web page; any firmware dated December 2022 and later cannot be crossflashed or downgraded.

IIRC 1.03 is dated earlier than December 2022? At least the files in the updater exe are dated October 2022? Does 1.03 contain the downgrade/crossflash protection already? Or was it implemented first in 1.04?

Pioneer lists a whole bunch of new firmwares now all the way down to the 208 series, I assume they all implement the new protections against downgrading and crossflashing, i.e. it's not recommended to flash any of them atm? They also list a whole bunch of new 213 series drives, e.g. a 213EBK, seems the 213 series is finally coming to Europe.

You're correct, it is definitely not recommended to upgrade the firmware on your Pioneer drive to any firmware dated December 2022 or later. Otherwise you will prevent downgrading or crossflashing that drive.

Thanks to the help of jadburner, I was able to crossflash the same drive/firmware combination to a BDR-S12UHT with firmware 1.02 - works perfectly with UHDs.

It seems that the BDR-S12UHT drive is currently not on sale anywhere in Europe, which is what I wanted to buy in the first place.
If anybody is looking for a (still) flashable BDR-S12XLT, try German Amazon, search for B0887XPT2Q. The drive I ordered there recently was new and manufactured in April 22, still has the compatible firmware 1.01

I didn't test before and was even not sure whether I have a TripleLayer UHD.

Had to check first, but then I found some.

Yes, all 3 Iron Man UHD's are recognized in makeMKV and play also in MPC-HC.

Screenshot attached.

Cheers
Tom

JuliusC 14.05.2023 16:51

Great to know! Did you test triple-layer UHDs (discs larger than 66 GB) ?

Tom886 14.05.2023 15:37

My one was produced 2014, Hardware Revision 1 (SAT8600) and I flashed it today in the morning to 211EBK.
As I wrote above, very UHD friendly now.
This means, tested 3 of my UHD's ad they were recognized.
Started MPC-HC and played the UHD (for test).

Personal opinion: I never regret to buy the 209EBK, very reliable and now with the update more valuable.

Cheers
Tom

The BDR-209EBK was produced in 2014, I don't know for how long.
There was a second hardware revision, I guess that was available in 2017/2018, but I am not so sure.
Both harrdware revisions can be crossflashed.
I don't think the manufacturer date is important, the most important is the firmware.
I think Pioneer started in 2022 started to release Firmwares which prohibits crossflashing for upgrade, but the last firmware for the 209EBK was released in 2020 and therefore "safe".

Cheers
Tom

So even the first hardware revision of the 209EBK (and, I'd suppose, the S09XLT etc) can be crossflashed to become UHD friendly?
For LG/Asus drives I know the hardware is important, drives made before end of 2015 can't support UHD. I was wondering if this was the case for Pioneer too.

Tom886 14.05.2023 15:05

The BDR-209EBK was produced in 2014, I don't know for how long.

Welcome to the forums, JuliusC ! It sounds like you don't already own a Pioneer Blu-ray drive? If not, you'll need to be careful when you buy one, since some of the recent Pioneer drives with the latest firmware cannot currently be crossflashed to a UHD-friendly drive.

Thanks
!

I understand that the latest firmwares make it impossible to crossflash and to become UHD friendly, so I'm looking for used or older models. From my understanding, 209EBK, S09XLT, 2209, 211EBK, 211M, 212EBK, 2212, 212M, S12XLT would be crossflashable to support UHD, but DBK variants not advised.
Would all 09 series (except DBK) work, or is there a manufacturing date to look at?
Are 08 series too old or could be covered?

I dont speak polish, and it's quite difficult to make searches with G Translate... Sorry...

Hello,
I was wondering about Pioneer drives cross-flashing and the BDRFlash tool talked about in these pages. I was looking for an UHD-friendly drive, Pioneer drives seem of better hardware quality than Asus/LG but the UHD native ones are really expensive.

I "had" a Pio BDR-209EBK and with the help of @jadburner, I was able to flash it to an BDR-211EBK.
Very UHD-friendly now, reads my UHDs and even can play them with MPC-HC.
Awesome forum and awesome help.

Thanks a lot!

Unfortunatelly Im not able to dump firmware:

-----------------------------------------------------

Firmware reading is not supported for this drive.

-----------------------------------------------------

Im not sure if cross-flashing firmware to UHD version of BDR-XD07 will work and will result with UHD support. Also, is English or Polish prefered?

Jadburner,

I've been trying to reply to your PM but I don't know if it is sending or not as I do not see the reply in my thread. I you have received multiple messages, I apologize.

The following are the firmware in my drives:

BDR-2212 (BDR-212M) - v1.03
BDR-212UBK (BDR-212U) - v1.01

As mentioned in the previous post, I would like to crossflash these to the BDR-S12J-X.

Thanks!

I used to use optical media very often. After recently distancing myself, the news that Panasonic is to cease Blu-ray Disc production has reignited the fever.Unfortunately, the internet community in Japan that talks about optical discs has been decimated. That's why I'm very excited to see such a heated discussion on this forum and I'm really enjoying your contributions.
I thank my lucky stars that I have found you all here.

Nice to meet you all,

Recently I was impressed that a CDR(Yuden, TDK, MITSUI, Ricoh,,) I created 20 years ago still works fine.
But now I do not own a CD drive so have purchased a new Pioneer drive.
If you don't mind, I would like to have a tool for me as well.

I salute all seekers.

Hello, my name is Tom, lining in Taiwan in the last 20 years, originally from Germany.

Registered today, after reading in the makemkv forum, that my Pioneer BDR-209M (EBK as reported in DVRTool 1.02) could maybe in the future read UHD.
I have also a Pioneer DVR-S18LBK, but not in use anymore.

May I ask also for the latest version of DVRTool.

Also, I have no idea whether it would even make sense to Crossflash this device (if even possible), but for this, I need to read more.
Below a screenshot what DVRTool v1.02 got from my Pio.

Cheers
Tom

Isn't the 212V a supposedly modified 212D? Nice to turn that into a UHD supporting writer. :D

Yes, the 212V is a Vinpower-specific model based on the 212D that uses Japanese parts, industrial tray gears and pulleys, and modified firmware for "enhanced" DVD+-R burning.

The BDR-212V can be crossflashed to a BDR-212UHBK, BDR-S12UHT, or BDR-212ULBK (among others) to enable BDXL writing and UHD ripping with appropriate software. Below are writing and ripping results after a BDR-212V to BDR-212UHBK crossflash. Rips were performed using AnyDVD and MakeMKV on two differently sized UHD discs.

Hello jadburner,

Saw your post regarding the BDRFlash.
I would like to crossflash from a BDR-212EBK (manufactured in 2019) to a BDR-S12UHT.

Would that be possible with BDRflash? If yes, how to get this tool and the firmwares?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,

I'm a newbie here but I have 2 Pioneer drives (BDR-209DBK and BDR209EBK) manufactured in 2018 that I'd like to cross-flash to enable reading of BDXL and possibly rip my 4K BR with MakeMKV.
Would that be possible with BDRflash? If yes, how to get this tool and the firmwares?
Thank you in advance for your help.

PS : I also have a I-Odata slim external drive (basically a Pioneer BDR-UD02 - platform RS8410 - in USB 3.0 I-Odata enclosure) that cannot be used with MakeMKV. Any idea why?
