Free, Open Source, Windows/Linux/Mac Pioneer Flashing App
Hey everyone. I am huge believer in enabling people to backup and preserve their physical media collections. This includes the maintenance of their optical drives too. I don't believe you should be forced to pay people to do so, but I do encourage you use whatever tool you feel most comfortable with!
Im not here to try and get you to use my tool, just to say its here if you want it. Largest collection of OEM firmware: https://freemkv.org/firmware/find/ This page will tell you if it thinks there are compatible cross flashes so you can download them too. Ex. Search for UD03 and see UD04 is a potential cross flash. Use as your own discretion!! Open source cross platform flasher: https://freemkv.org/firmware/flash/ I didn't make this a specific "cross flashing tool". You download a firmware, you flash it. If its "allowed" or "safe" we do it. Simply put, you control what firmware you flash to your drive. We handle getting that firmware onto the drive (like the 2022 era downgrade stuff). Read all documentation here: https://freemkv.org/docs/firmware-tools/ It backs up into OEM format files that you can share and others can flash, or upload to me and Ill put on website if they are truly OEM ones I am missing. The more OEM you can share the better for everyone! It takes about 2 mins to backup (I read twice and verify heavy), and < 60 seconds to flash. Its open source, contributors welcome. Branch it and make your own tool from it. Do as you like. Its all MIT licensed. No warranty of guarantees of anything! This is being tested by a few people other than myself, hopefully they will post their successes or failures here. |

Lets see if it works for people first lol Excited for feedback, and the crossflash stuff is interesting, I took a unique angle there and have advertised what I believe to be cross flashable. Its a huge list, so I could very wrong
I need people with more expertise to comment or test. But everything I did came from the massive amount of firmwares I hold so I was able to read each one and "confirm" functionality vs needing testers. Testers just needed now to confirm my findings more so than find them, if that makes sense.

Some good feedback rolling in already. Working for some and findings some bugs with others. 0.10.4 should help the known issues. Also gave the GUI an overhaul. Check 0.10.4 when its on website if you all can

Looking into "error: probing Pioneer firmware read access: short firmware read at 0x400000: 0/1" now.
Was this on 0.10.4? |

Ill add better logging to see what the underlying issue is.
0.10.5 will have a "Details > Copy/Save diagnostic log" if you can share it. Im deploying it now, check in 60 mins if its posted to download and try and see what logs say |

Thanks!
![]() With freemkv-flash v0.10.5 i was able to downgrade my 212M @ S12(XLT) with firmware 1.04 to 1.02, then crossflashed it with BDRFlash 1.00 to S12J-X 1.02, and updated to 1.03 with the official Pioneer flasher.

USB shouldn't matter. Software just reads from the drive the OS finds. I personally am running a USB drive.
I am looking into your logs now |

I have 2 read modes and I wanted to try and clear up my goals for each:
dump - dump all readable data from your drive to a file. Usually not restorable as is but may be, depends on the drive/make/model. Includes everything your drive had on it at that time and 2 dumps may not match due to live RAM changes. Good for debugging and reverse engineering. backup - creates an OEM backup of your drive. If you flash an OEM firmware, and do a backup, the 2 files should be identical. This is so you all can backup your files before you do any flashing and share them with others so we can build out the OEM database with some firmwares only now living on old drives. I am working on fixing some bugs with the Mediatek backups. FYI I didn't make it clear in the opening post (but website does) that this flasher will flash, backup, dump MediaTek and Pioneer drives. 1 tool for both. |

Love it! For others out there, the theory is that you should just be able to go from 212M to S12J-X latest in 1 move with my flasher. No need for the multi step/tool process. But you all do what you are comfortable with!
