Until recently, performing write-quality scans using Pioneer error-rate utility was only possible with expensive, specialized models like the BDR-PR1M..., or by cross-flashing a BDR-PR1EPA to a BDR-PR1ML. Other drives could not be cross-flashed using the BDRflash tool. Now, however, even an older BDR-207 can be used to perform write-quality scans with the Pioneer utility. I already had a BDR-PR1EPA cross-flashed to a BDR-PR1ML, but I also cross-flashed two standard BDR-207 units as an experiment and it works. Previously, I had to purchase three Pioneer 207/S07 drives just to take one functional laser assembly for my blind BDR-PR1EPA. you can see serial number S07 became PR1M

And interesting point this Pioneer software (PERU) shows personal serial number for each BD-R discs

Vinpower scans are more detailed, but LDC and BIS values correlate with each other. The Pioneer utility provides an RSER metric (which correlates with the Vinpower data), whereas BEMax is a distinct metric that, based on my tests of several hundred BD-Rs, does not show a strong correlation with the others

I can't see any tresholds in these Pioneer scans. I know exactly from the Vinpower / LG scans with VPTools when a disc is borderline or bad. Can you enlighten me?

I have a rare BDR-PR1MDCB; thanks to a brilliant developer, the freemkv tool was able to turn it into a scanner BDR-PR1ML

I am not currently tracking any known issues across the board. If somebody thinks I am missing something please hit me up on discord or message me here. 0.14.0 will be out fixing a few error messages to be clearer, some mediatek flashes need to be told what the previous firmware is as it cant read from drive, multilingual capabilities. But generally its seeming stable at the moment.

I can't see any tresholds in these Pioneer scans.

I don't record movies, so I am not even familiar with what a "layer transition" issue looks like during playback.
Vinpower scans would likely reveal such layer transition problems in greater detail, but PERU will also highlight them (there are quite a few Pioneer scans on this forum; some of which are actually worse than the scan of the Panasonic disc I shared above).


In my humble opinion, PERU is better suited for:
1. Determining whether an initial recording is of sufficient quality for archival storage, so that it doesn't need to be checked every single year.
2. Providing clear, distinct gradations for periodic assessments during long-term storage.
My first BD-R and BD-RE discs were recorded back in 2010; according to the scans, they remain in excellent condition today. They were authentic Japanese-made discs; quite expensive at the time; and I still make an effort to source Japanese-made media for my optical backups.

I strongly suggest to use only BDR-25 for data discs. There is a high chance with todays multi-layer discs that you will have data loss at the layer break. Yes, I checked old BDR25s and no issue. I also checked old BDR50s and some were compromized. These discs are expensive while BDR-25 can actually compete again due to raised hard disc cost.

Unlike those for Pioneer, the firmware pages for LG are packed with information. Could you tell me what exactly can be modified? Also, is it possible to make a Pioneer region-free?

Actually i didnt want to bother Matt too much.. i would also love to make my Pioneer drives "RegionFree" too. but no rush.. hopefully Matt can take a break for awhile first before setting out on that "RegionFree Mod"

So the modifiable means my modify app can convert the firmware and add those listed Features. I can clean up wording so Features is clearer that its post modify features

Pioneer does not need modified firmware and instead just needs existing features settings changed or firmware updated at runtime which FreeMKV does vs writing new firmware and having to be flashed

That said the flash app will be updated to adjust some of the settings like region. Just trying to make sure whats released right now is solid and clear before continuing.

FYI if you use my flasher and it errors or has issues, I advise you to pause and contact me before panicking and using other flashers to restore. Especially if what you were trying to do is kind of out there as my flasher does things that others do not (legit things that nobody else has found) and using another flasher may not undo those changes and leave you in an even worse spot.

Just asking if you have an issue, pause and contact me and then we discuss next steps.

As for knowing issues, at this time I am only tracking one mediatek flashing issue around 1.v9. Just making it more robust as it had to be done in recovery mode not flash mode and 1.v9 is different so im working through it. No known issues on anything else.
