Ok, following the instructions above I flashed my ASUS BW-16D1HT from encrypted 3.11 to ASUS 3.10MK, then the WH16NS60 1.03MK firmware, and from that I went to the WH16NS58 1.V5 firmware. But with the 1.V5 firmware the drive wouldn't write to BD-Rs anymore, I always get a write error. I was able to write a BD-RE with 1.V5 though. Then I went back to the WH16NS60 1.03MK firmware, and it writes again as normal, thus this doesn't seem to be the issue mentioned on the MakeMKV forum, that after crossflashing ASUS writers to LG firmware (or vice versa) it could be to be unable to write at all, but here the crossflashing to LG 1.03MK firmware doesn't seem to cause any such issue, thus there seems to be something wrong with the 1.V5 firmware from the MakeMKV firmware package?

This is normal behavior. The WH16NS58 firmware just supports less media codes compared to standard LG firmware. This firmware should just be used to do disc quality scans and ideally you should only burn using a Pioneer drive and not an ASUS or LG.

Ah, ok, thanks. Good to know. Would be good if there'd be any note regarding that coming with that firmware, or did I miss that info somehow?
Kinda surprises me though, I used CMCMAGBA5 media, i.e. what I thought to be pretty common media, and it gave me a write error. I just wanted to know if the ASUS writers I bought aren't defect, thus I wanted to do a test burn, which I did with the LG firmware then.
Which leads me to another question, is there a supported media list for LG drives available anywhere? I got those lists for all Pioneer drives I have, but I couldn't find anything from LG.

All you need is a diagnostic/test program. It will show you what write strategies the drive has.
If I remember correctly, the VinPower drive firmware has write strategies for CMC MAG BA5 media, as seen in the screenshot from VinPower's PlexTool.

It's important to remember that the firmware for these drives is designed to work with duplicators, recorders, and other specialized VinPower devices.

Especially on new systems/hardware, there can be various surprises...

The firmware for version 1.V1 was developed by Jadburner/Blackened2687 and myself and is 1000% correct. I don't remember who developed version 1.V5; I don't know if it's ours.

Indeed even 1.V5 shows write strategies for CMCMAGBA5 (4x, 6x, 8x), but it doesn't work.

If I remember correctly 1.V1 is for the MT1939 chipset while 1.V5 is for MT1959. So it shouldn't be used on a MT1959 drive because it could brick it. 1.V5 was taken from Mike's MK firmware collection in the Makemkv forum and also makes the drive UHD capable. I don't know anything about it's origin.
It's also always good pratice to reboot the PC after a flash. Try this and then try again to burn a disc with 1.V5. And use Vinpowers VPTools to check the disc as it was suggested above.

For NVC:NS40 hardware, the MediaTek MT1939 was from VinPower 1.D3 for the WH16NS48 version.

For NVC:50/51/55/58, the MediaTek MT1959 was from 1.V... for the WH16NS58 and TST4, which also did not support disc quality tests for the WH16NS58, which did not support UHD reading.

Thanks for clarifying that czary2mary! I was a bit overly concerned but better safe than sorry!

I searched my archive an found 1.V1, 1.V2 and 1.V5 original. I addition there is Mike's patched 1.V5 Mk version that allows reading UHDs and disc quality tests which therefore is the best firmware. I'm going to insert some media and will check what Imgburn has to say about it. I think I also have some of theses CMCMAG discs.

Issue confirmed. CMCMAGBA5 failed with Imgburn right at the beginning of the burn when speed was set to max (8x). Second disc when speed set to 4x is burning now. When the drive was on BH16NS55 1.02 firmware i could burn these discs at max and never had any issues.

The screenshot shows that the drive's OPC is unable to set the laser power for a 6x write ratio. The drive won't even start recording or pass the OPC test for this write strategy.

As I mentioned, these drives are not designed to work with computers or PC programs outside of the VinPower platform and drivers.
