Isn't the 212V a supposedly modified 212D? Nice to turn that into a UHD supporting writer. :D

The BDR-212V can be crossflashed to a BDR-212UHBK, BDR-S12UHT, or BDR-212ULBK (among others) to enable BDXL writing and UHD ripping with appropriate software. Below are writing and ripping results after a BDR-212V to BDR-212UHBK crossflash. Rips were performed using AnyDVD and MakeMKV on two differently sized UHD discs.

PS : I also have a I-Odata slim external drive (basically a Pioneer BDR-UD02 - platform RS8410 - in USB 3.0 I-Odata enclosure) that cannot be used with MakeMKV. Any idea why?

Thanks to @blackened2687, I've had the opportunity to test his latest tool BDRFlash. The tool is currently at a v0.99 beta level, so it should be generally available real soon now. :)

One of the very useful features of the tool is the ability to crossflash between drives with similar attributes. As an example, here's the process for crossflashing a BDR-209D into a BDR-S11JBK. This allows the drive to utilize BDXL media and take advantage of new MIDs and other features of newer firmware.

Here's the device information for a BDR-209D before any crossflashing.

As you can see, the drive lacks support for BDXL media. To begin, we start BDRFlash and select the drive to crossflash:

The Select command menu includes options to flash firmware and put the drive in kernel mode:

Since we want to crossflash the drive, we choose the Flash firmware option. We then need to use the file browse option to select the kernel and firmware files we want to flash to the drive. Since you need to select both files, you can use Ctrl-click to select them both.

blackened2687 provides the firmware/kernel files in folders, in this case a folder named BDR-S11JBK_1.52_v1. Once you've selected the files to flash, click the START button. If the program's internal consistency checks are satisfied, you'll see the confirmation dialog.

Select Yes, and a series of messages will appear as the program flashes the files. Here's one example:

When the flashing is complete, you'll see a success message. Here's the device information for our crossflashed drive. You can see that the drive is now a BDR-S11 and has support for BDXLmedia.

The process is really quite easy, and the program contains numerous checks to ensure that the drive and files to crossflash are matched.

You would need a drive from the last 2-3 years with a fairly recent firmware update. Pioneer or LG drives are your best bet. Most are not inexpensive, however.

Welcome to the forums, DaveRiscman. Although the BDR-TD05 is capable of writing to quad-layer discs, since it's a BDXL drive, it never received a firmware update from Pioneer to enable it. That's why it won't properly recognize your SONY-NQ1 media. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of alternate firmware for the drive that would enable QL support.

ImgBurn reports a "BD-RE XL" in the log but I think that might be for the drive itself. I don't have any other BDXL discs (non quadlayer 128GB) to try though, but all information online and the box seems to say the drive supports it (even 4 layer BDXL...?).
The Sony discs are model 10BNR4VAPS4 if that's of any importance.

Hello. I have a Pioneer BDR-TD05 drive inside of a Logitec casing (LBD-PME6U3). Logitec offered firmware up to 1.02, which I installed over the stock 1.00.
It's able to read standard BluRay videos, but if I try to burn 128GB Quad-Layer SONY BDXL discs, it's incompatible (ImgBurn reports "Incompatible Medium Installed"). The unit has a external power as well as USB, so I thought external power would fix it, but it didn't.

I believe this issue is because of the firmware. My firmware is dated 2014, while the discs were only beginning to be manufactured in 2018. I downloaded every Logitec and Pioneer firmware available on their respective websites and parsed the firmware microcode file headers to see if there is a model with the same "Hardware Version", but there wasn't any.

I found a mysterious 2.02 firmware on Fujitsu's website for the BDR-TD0. Fujitsu is using their own firmware flasher rather than the signed Pioneer one, and it's reporting my device as incompatible, though the microcode file embed in the flasher is the same format.

I think it can be because of firmware (now its version is 1.01), but i can't find a way to update it.
